Attic Insulation Installation

New insulation added to attics with little or none, or topped up to the recommended level. Blown-in insulation is usually a good option when adding to an attic that already has some insulation, because it fills around joists, wiring and obstructions. Radiant Barrier Installation

Reflective barriers installed under the roof deck to block radiant heat before it reaches the attic floor and the air ducts. [CONFIRM: whether the client installs radiant barriers.]

Old, compressed, wet, damaged or contaminated insulation removed and replaced with new material. [CONFIRM: whether the client offers removal, including contaminated insulation.]

Wall and Ceiling Insulation During Remodels

How Much Attic Insulation Does a Miami Home Need?

Insulation is measured in R-value, its resistance to heat flow. The higher the number, the better it insulates.

South Florida, including Miami-Dade, is in climate zone 1. For existing homes in zone 1, ENERGY STAR recommends:

Your attic today

Recommended action

No insulation

Add insulation to reach R30

About 3 to 4 inches of existing insulation

Add about R25

Floors over unconditioned space

R13

ENERGY STAR notes that this guidance is based on the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code.

How to check your attic: ENERGY STAR suggests reading the R-value printed on existing batts, or measuring the depth of the insulation with a tape measure after identifying the type of insulation. We measure the depth in several places during our inspection and tell you what you have now and what you need.

Why Attic Insulation Matters So Much in Miami

On a sunny day, the roof heats up and radiates that heat down into the attic. In many South Florida homes, the air conditioning ducts and air handler also sit in the attic, surrounded by that hot air. Good attic insulation slows the heat moving from the attic into your living space, so your air conditioner runs less to keep the house cool.

Insulation also works best when the attic is sealed first. ENERGY STAR’s guidance pairs attic air sealing with attic insulation, because gaps around light fixtures, pipes, wiring and attic hatches let conditioned air escape and hot attic air in. [CONFIRM: whether the client offers attic air sealing.]

Radiant Barriers: Worth It in Miami?

Radiant barriers are shiny, reflective materials installed in attics mainly to reduce summer heat gain. According to the U.S. Department of Energy:

  • Radiant barriers are more effective in hot climates than cool ones, especially when cooling air ducts are located in the attic
  • Some studies show they can reduce cooling costs by 5 to 10 percent in a warm, sunny climate
  • They do not reduce heat conduction the way regular insulation does, so they work alongside insulation, not instead of it

To work, the reflective surface must face an air space, and dust on the surface reduces its effectiveness.

The DOE strongly recommends not laying a radiant barrier directly on top of attic floor insulation, because it collects dust and may trap moisture in the insulation.

For a typical Miami home with ducts in the attic, a radiant barrier installed correctly under the roof deck, combined with enough attic insulation, is a strong combination.

FPL Ceiling Insulation Rebate

If you are a Florida Power & Light customer, you may qualify for an instant $220 rebate on ceiling insulation. According to FPL:

  • You must have an active FPL residential account
  • Your home’s current ceiling insulation must be less than R-8
  • You must purchase upgraded ceiling insulation
  • The installation must be done by an FPL-approved Participating Independent Contractor (PIC)
  • All attic spaces must be accessible for verification
  • The rebate can only be used once every 20 years
  • Insulation installed on top of an unfinished drop ceiling does not qualify

The PIC deducts the rebate from your final invoice.

[CONFIRM: Is the client an FPL Participating Independent Contractor? If yes: “We are an FPL Participating Independent Contractor and handle the rebate paperwork for you.” If no: “We can tell you whether your home is likely to qualify. To claim the rebate, the work must be done by an FPL-approved contractor.”]

Program details can change, so check FPL’s current requirements before you start.

What About the Federal Tax Credit?

Many websites still advertise a federal tax credit of up to 30 percent for insulation. That credit, the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C), was ended early by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in July 2025. It does not apply to projects completed after December 31, 2025.

If you completed qualifying insulation work in 2025, you may still be able to claim it on that year’s tax return. Ask a tax professional about your situation.

Our Attic Insulation Installation Process

  1. Attic inspection. We check the current insulation type and depth, look for damage, leaks, pests and moisture, and note where the ducts, wiring and vents are.
  2. Written estimate. Insulation type, target R-value, square footage, any removal or air sealing, and the schedule.
  3. Protection. The path from the entry to the attic access is covered, and the work area inside the home is protected.
  4. Preparation. Damaged insulation is removed if needed, and soffit vents are kept clear so the attic can still breathe.
  5. Installation. Insulation is installed evenly to the target depth across the whole attic, including hard-to-reach edges.
  6. Depth check. We confirm the installed depth matches the target R-value in several places.
  7. Cleanup and walkthrough. We show you photos of the finished attic and leave the home clean.

[CONFIRM: whether the client provides depth markers or a certificate showing the installed R-value.]

Licensing and Insurance

Florida’s House Bill 735 moved occupational licensing to the state, and Miami-Dade County stopped issuing its insulation and acoustical tile specialty license after July 1, 2023. That makes it more important to check an insulation contractor’s insurance, reviews and, for rebates, whether they are an FPL Participating Independent Contractor. Homepage

How to Choose Insulation Installers in Miami

  • Inspection first. A good installer measures your current insulation before quoting.
  • A target R-value in writing. The estimate should state the R-value and the square footage, not just “add insulation.”
  • Air sealing and ventilation. Ask how they handle air leaks and keep soffit vents clear.
  • Radiant barrier advice. Ask where it will be installed. It should not be laid directly on top of attic floor insulation.
  • Rebate status. Ask whether they are an FPL Participating Independent Contractor.
  • Up-to-date incentive information. Be cautious of anyone still promising the federal insulation tax credit for new work.
  • Insurance and reviews you can check yourself.

Insulation Installation FAQs

HomeAdvisor’s Miami data puts the average attic insulation installation at about $1,099, with most projects between $736 and $1,779. Your price depends on attic size, existing insulation, the insulation type and any removal or radiant barrier work.

For existing homes in climate zone 1, which includes Miami, ENERGY STAR recommends reaching R30 in an uninsulated attic, or adding about R25 if you already have 3 to 4 inches of insulation.

They can. The U.S. Department of Energy says radiant barriers are more effective in hot climates, especially when air ducts are in the attic, and some studies show cooling cost savings of 5 to 10 percent. They should be installed facing an air space, not laid on top of attic floor insulation.

Yes. FPL offers a $220 instant rebate for qualifying customers whose current ceiling insulation is less than R-8. The work must be done by an FPL-approved Participating Independent Contractor, and each home can qualify once every 20 years.

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit ended for projects completed after December 31, 2025. Work completed in 2025 may still qualify on that year’s return. Check with a tax professional.
